Baby Lock Solaris BLSA

The new Baby Lock Solaris with the IQ Visionary projections system, will make you a better quilter and increase your sewing enjoyment!

I can honestly say, growing up in this industry, I would never have thought that a new technology could expand my enjoyment of sewing, specifically quilting. You see, I enjoy free-motion quilting, actually… I’m good at it. My father taught me at a young age how to demonstrate free-motion embroidery and I transitioned that skill into quilting.

But I have always found piecing, how would I say, kind of monotonous. Okay, to be truthful, I’m not very good at it, so I tend to spend more time embroidering than quilting.  I think this would describe most of us, we enjoy what we are good at.

As I was preparing my presentation for our Sewing Technology Party last month, I was testing the 60° IQ Visionary guide with the ¼” seam allowance. At first, I wasn’t sure of the benefit. I do understand the value of the perfect guidance that the projected 1/4” seam guide gives you. The great thing is that you can use it with all sewing feet. This allows you the use of your more traditional foot – giving you the best fabric control – while still maintaining the ¼” seam allowance.

But I still was not sure of the benefit of the 60° angle. So, I referred to some of the sewing and quilting instructors at Moore’s, for their expertise. The term “Y” seam came up. When you are piecing together, 60° triangles, you cannot start at the very beginning of the fabrics edge. If you did that, as you progressed and connected several triangles, the center of your creation would turn into a hard mass of seam connections, it may even look like a quilting “sink hole”.

The proper technique is to measure and mark your starting point exactly ¼” from the start of the fabric edge. This will form a “Y” seam that will lay properly and allow you to progress to the next triangle, forming a more flowing intersection of seams.

Easier said than done – right?

In quizzing people at the Tech Parties, I found that most people were aware of this, but only few have mastered the technique. This keeps people from enjoying quilting, and this was also my problem.

Well now, this is no longer the case. With the 60° guide, that the Baby Lock Solaris projects, not only do I have perfect seam allowance to follow, but it also projects the starting point for each triangle. It is now, fun and easy!
